ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

© Gakuryu Ishii

Born in 1957 in Fukuoka Prefecture, Mr Gakuryu Ishii, formerly known as Sogo Ishii, is a trailblazing Japanese film director who revolutionised the Japanese New Wave. He burst onto the scene with his electrifying university graduation project, Crazy Thunder Road, and quickly became a cinematic force to be reckoned with.

His visionary style is showcased in a string of unforgettable films, including the explosive Burst City, the darkly comedic The Crazy Family, the surreal 1/2 Man, and the haunting Angel Dust. His masterpieces, August in the Water and Labyrinth of Dreams, continued to push the boundaries of Japanese cinema, while Electric Dragon 80000V and Gojoe delivered raw, visceral energy. Even decades into his career, Mr Gakuryu Ishii's creative fire remains unquenchable. In 2024, he returns with The Box Man, starring the enigmatic Masatoshi Nagase.

Beyond filmmaking, he shaped future generations of creators as a professor in the film course at the Kobe Design University, a role he held from 2006 to 2023.
