Totto-chan is a rambunctious seven-year-old girl, perpetually excited by the world around her. However, when this “excitement” sees her kicked out of her local public school, she starts going to a new type of school where the children are free to explore whatever interests them.

The author of the original novel, Ms Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, also known as Totto-chan, is a very popular TV personality who has her own program, Tetsuko no Heya (Tetsuko’s Room), which celebrated its 50th anniversary this past February. This film is based on her autobiographical novel, which depicts her childhood experience and has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.
This screening is part of the official celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan (SJ60).
