Japan Creative Centre (JCC), The Japan Foundation, and the Singapore Film Society are pleased to bring back The Imaginary (PG), a popular anime film that was screened at the Japanese Film Festival Singapore in 2024, in this one-time fringe event of JFF!

Audiences will also be treated to a special presentation by Mr Chang Sieh Yong, Principal of JCS Japanese Language School, on how learning Japanese Language can open the door to a deeper appreciation and truly fulfilling experience of Japanese culture at its fullest!

This event is part of the official celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan (SJ60).

Studio Ponoc’s new animated feature film The Imaginary is a wondrous adventure that portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger, a boy no one can see imagined by Amanda to share her thrilling make-believe adventures. But when Rudger, suddenly alone, arrives at The Town of Imaginaries, where forgotten Imaginaries live and find work, he faces a mysterious threat.

Directed by renowned animator Yoshiyuki Momose (Spirited Away and other Studio Ghibli films), The Imaginary is an unforgettable adventure of love, loss and the healing power of imagination.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Mr Chang Sieh Yong is the Principal of the Japanese Language School at the Japanese Cultural Society (JCS) and serves as the Honorary Secretary on its Executive Management Committee. With nearly four decades of experience in Japanese language education, he has taught Japanese language extensively at JCS and NTU, worked as a Japanese translator, interpreter, and trainer in his early days, and served as an invigilator for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) since 1986.

A Japanese Government (Monbusho - Now known as Monkasho/MEXT) Scholar under the Public Service Commission of Singapore’s Overseas Merit Scholarship, Mr Chang studied in Japan and earned a Japanese Language Certificate from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in 1982 before completing a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1986. His rich academic background and lifelong engagement with Japanese language and culture continue to inspire learners to deepen their proficiency and broaden their horizons.

First started in 1983, the main objective of the festival is to promote the appreciation of Japanese cinema and culture in Singapore, and to deepen the bonds within the community of Japanese film fans.

SFS Somerset is an independent cinema programmed by the Singapore Film Society (SFS). It is situated within Golden Village Cineleisure at 8 Grange Road, Level 5 and 6, Singapore 239695:



Nearest MRT is Somerset (NS23) and nearest bus stop is Opposite Mandarin Orchard (B09037). The cinema is Hall 6.



Admission:
All seats are free seating. Registration will start 30 minutes before the screening. Kindly be informed that reserved seats will be given to walk-ins and standees 5 minutes before the starting time.
