JCC is proud to present KOKUHO - the all-time highest-grossing live-action film in Japan, winner of numerous festival awards and recipient of an Oscar nomination - as the 100th title in our JCC Cinema, marking 15 years and 100 editions of this beloved programme.

JCC Cinema started in 2011 as an initiative to introduce Japanese pop culture and creativity through films. Throughout the years, we have presented a diverse range of titles, from anime and live-action films to documentaries and Singapore-Japanese collaborations.

This screening holds special significance as it is also part of the official SJ60 celebrations, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Kikuo, born into a yakuza clan, possesses extraordinary beauty. The death of his father brings him under the arm of the famous Kabuki actor Hanai Hanjiro. There he meets Shunsuke, born and raised as the only son of a prestigious Kabuki family.

The two men with completely different backgrounds and talents, inheriting opposing family blood from the Kabuki and the Yakuza, decide to devote their lives to the refinement of Kabuki. This is a story spanning 50 years of the rise and fall of fame, bloodlines and talents, scandals and glories, and layers of trust and betrayal.
