In the spirit of last year's SJ50, 50 years of Singapore-Japan diplomatic relations, Singaporean designers will be working together with traditional craftsmen from Ishikawa Prefecture to create new kinds of traditional crafts. Based on the theme of Singaporean ‘creation’ and Japanese ‘tradition’, a new range of products which combines ‘Singapore Style’ and Japan’s delicate craftsmanship will be showcased.

The exhibition will feature three tie-ups between Singaporean designers and Ishikawa Prefecture craftsmen.

1) Dyes are extracted from orchid petals similar to those found in the UNESCO World Heritage site, Singapore Botanic Gardens, and made into stoles using Kaga Yuzen dyeing techniques. This beautiful item, featuring floral motifs from Singapore Botanic Gardens, was created by a craftsman who usually works with time-honoured Japanese kimono adorned with natural motifs of plants and flowers.

2) Designers from Singapore select shop ‘Supermama’ have designed Yamanaka Lacquerware smartphone covers and ballpoint pens. Skilled craftsmen from Japan, who usually work with various design motifs, now make use of these Singapore imagery-inspired designs for these splendid products.

3) These accessories are designed by students from Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design, and have been granted a beautiful coat of lacquer by the dexterous Japanese lacquerware craftsmen.
