The competition was conceptualised by Maiko Makito, the managing director and co-owner of Pearl Falco Corporation who took the helm of the family’s pearl business in Japan, as she felt the urge to save the pearl industry in Ise Shima in Mie Prefecture. It was created with the aim of sharing the beauty of Akoya pearls with the world. This year’s theme is "Moonlight". Since ancient times, many cultures have cherished pearls like no other gemstone, some describing pearls as “Dewdrops from the Moon” dropped into the ocean. For this year’s Grand Prix, we will explore the cultural significance and relationship between pearls, the moon, and moonlight.

Ise Shima is the birthplace of cultured pearls. In the late 1880s, Akoya oysters were first cultivated in Ise Shima, establishing a method to create beautiful round pearls. This technique for cultivating pearls ultimately contributed to the growth of the pearl industry worldwide. Akoya oyster cultivation requires no less than daily observation. Even after years of focused cultivation methods, fewer than 30% of cultured pearls can be used for jewellery. Among the difficulties facing luxury pearl jewellery cultivation today, include declining numbers of experienced pearl farmers and global warming. These factors make luxury pearl jewellery production and design even more challenging for the industry.

Mayumi Mitsuhashi, is a 74-year-old practicing Ama diver, a breath-hold diver who catches seafood without any oxygen tank. It might be misunderstood that they catch Akoya pearls, but they actually catch seafood like abalone, lobster, sea urchin, turban shell, seaweed etc. Since ancient time, Ama divers have lived in Ise Shima, and are the first to discover natural Akoya Pearl in Ise Shima. Hence, Japan started to culture Akoya Oysters in Ise Shima, and established a method to create a beautiful round pearl for the first time in the world. Ama diver tools were found around 3000 years ago in Ise Shima from ancient ruins, but Ama diver culture is considered to have begun around 5000 years ago.

In 2016, there were around 2000 Ama divers in Japan, with about a half of them in Ise Shima. But the number of Ama divers has been decreasing due to aging, lack of successors and poor harvest due to global warming and seawater condition.
