IKEBANA WORKSHOP

Ikebana Workshop

25 October 2024

Japan Creative Centre (JCC)

Join us at JCC to try your hand at making your own Ikebana arrangement! The 'Composition of Mass and Lines' workshop by Esther Law teaches participants to create an Ikebana arrangement of "massed expression": to recognise the line element in flowers and plant materials, and densely gather them into a shape-form. This manifests the idea of 'strength' and 'power' in Ikebana.

In the 'Ikebana with no Kenzan' workshop by Netty Chu, participants will learn to create an Ikebana arrangement without a Kenzan. It teaches the technique of 'Balance' and supporting flowers and materials using the concept of 'natural support'.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP FACILITATORS

© Esther Law

Esther Law is a freelance florist practising Ikebana from the school of Sogetsu, and has been passionately practising this art for 8 years. Having participated in many exhibitions, she has also conducted workshops and demonstrations, including the Singapore Garden Festival 2024 organised by NParks, as well as an exhibition at the Sakura Festival, Gardens by the Bay. She has also made her presence in Colombo, Sri Lanka, having been invited by SIFA Society (Shi-en Ikebana and Flora Art) Sri Lanka as a demonstrator and workshop facilitator.

© Netty Chu

Netty Chu's encounter with floral arts started mainly as parent who sent her daughters to weekly after-school enrichment classes conducted by Riji Christopher Lim AIFD at Nanyang Primary School in 2006. In 2013, she decided to start learning western arrangements from Christopher, who also conducted lessons for parents. She was an active parent volunteer for events organised by the school such as Floral Harmony at Nanyang, as well as other events which the school participated in such as the Singapore Garden Festival. After learning western arrangements for about 2 years, she moved on to learning Sogetsu and has been enjoying it ever since. She currently holds a First Grade Somu.

ABOUT IKEBANA

Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, is a subtle, sensitive and sophisticated art form having a recorded history from many centuries. It is steeped in the philosophy of developing proximity with nature. Ikebana is a form of art similar to painting and sculpture. The artist expresses his/her creativity by using the medium of natural floral materials and containers. The fundamentals of Ikebana are as relevant today as they were centuries ago, but the art form has evolved to suit the modern society.

ABOUT IKEBANA INTERNATIONAL

Ikebana International (I.I.) is a non-profit cultural organisation headquartered in Tokyo, and is dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Ikebana. Founded in 1956 by the late Ellen Gordon Allen, with a dream to create an organisation uniting the people of the world through their mutual love of nature and enjoyment of Ikebana. I.I. currently has presence in over 50 countries, with 161 Chapters and membership of approximately 7600 people. It is inspired by its motto "Friendship through flowers".

Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135 was founded in 1969 by Lady Bette De La Mare, wife of the then British High Commissioner to Singapore. The Chapter has since then actively contributed to the learning, appreciation and promotion of the art of Ikebana in Singapore and the region. The Chapter members come from various schools of Ikebana such as Ikenobo, Sogetsu, Ohara, Ichiyo, Ryusei-ha, Souami and Kozan. Monthly events organised by the Chapter offer the members and Ikebana lovers a platform for interaction and learning. Over the years, the Chapter has also raised funds through this beautiful art form and donated to many charitable causes both locally and internationally.
