In light of our very first Japanese Film Festival Online 2024, acclaimed cinematographer Hideho Urata (Plan 75) will present a masterclass at Japan Creative Centre (JCC) on the fundamentals of cinematography and his philosophy behind it. He will share his vast experiences from working on international sets (Kamataki, The Clone Returns Home, A Land Imagined) and, most recently, his work on local director Nicole Midori Woodford's debut feature Last Shadow at First Light. During the masterclass, guests will have the opportunity to learn more about his collaboration with Nicole and interact with him.

ABOUT HIDEHO UEDA

Mr. Hideho Urata is a highly acclaimed cinematographer based in Singapore, originally from Japan. He began his career in the United States, where he refined his skills and artistic vision.His work on the feature film Kamataki (2005) earned it five awards at the Montréal World Film Festival 2005, as well as the Crystal Bear-Special Mention at the Berlin International Film Festival 2006. He also received accolades for his cinematography in The Clone Returns Home (2008), winning Best Cinematography at Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival 2009 and Best Visual Achievement at the New York Asian Film Festival 2009.


In Singapore, his work on A Land Imagined (2018) earned him the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival 2018, as well as Best Cinematography awards at the Valladolid International Film Festival - Seminci and the Asian Pacific Screen Awards. More recently, his cinematography in Plan 75 (2022) received a Special Mention in the Caméra d'Or competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. He was also nominated for Best Cinematography at the Asian Film Awards in 2023. Notable recent projects include Last Shadow at First Light (2023), The Box Man (2024), and Stranger Eyes (2024).

In addition to his cinematic achievements, Mr Urata serves as a senior lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts.

ABOUT JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL ONLINE 2024


The Japanese Film Festival (JFF) is one of the oldest country-based film festivals in Singapore, having started in 1983. It is a gateway for many into the wondrous world of Japanese cinema and culture. This year, we are hosting the very first ever online version of the JFF in Singapore!

The JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL ONLINE 2024 will feature up to 23 films and 2 TV dramas (a total of 20 episodes) which can be streamed for free in 27 countries and regions. The full list of films and TV dramas will be announced on our JCC and JFF social media pages, so stay tuned! The streaming period in Singapore will be from 5 June 2024 (from 11am onwards) to 3 July 2024 (until 11am).
