About Enshu Sado & Grand Master

© Film Voice 2013

The Enshu Sado School, founded more than 400 years ago by Mr Enshu Kobori, is one of Japan’s oldest schools. Enshu, remembered today as one of Japan’s greatest tea masters, was a Sado instructor for the Tokugawa shogunate. A man of extraordinary talents, he skilfully combined calligraphy, poetry and nature in his tea ceremonies, embodying the spirit of Enshu Sado – Kirei Sabi (綺麗さび).

The 12th Grand Master of Enshu Sado School, Mr Sokei Kobori, was invited by the NUS Japanese Studies Department in 1990 to instruct NUS students in the art of tea ceremony. The school has since dedicated itself to mentoring the NUS Sado Club, with two successive generations of Grand Masters visiting Singapore annually to offer students personal instruction.

The current 13th Grand Master, Mr Sojitsu Kobori, was born in September 17, 1956 and is the eldest son of Mr Kobori Sokei. He graduated from the Law Faculty of Gakushuin University in 1979 and succeeded as the school's Grand Master in 2001. Since 2011, the Grand Master has been actively promoting the art of Japanese tea ceremony overseas, in places such as Germany, France, Austria, Myanmar and Singapore. In 2004 and 2006, Mr Kobori performed kencha (献茶), a form of tea presentation for the purpose of peace and friendship exclusively to leaders in Myanmar.

This year, the Grand Master was conferred the Foreign Minister's Commendation Award in recognition of his significant contributions toward cultural exchange and mutual understanding through tea between Japan and Singapore, especially in regard to his contribution to NUS for almost 30 years.
