Fight against diabetes
–Efforts on diabetes in Japan and relationship with oral care–

Diabetes is a global epidemic disease and in recent years, international research studies have demonstrated that there is a bidirectional link between diabetes and periodontal disease. Sunstar is a pioneer on championing this relationship by collaborating with Joslin Diabetes Center, the world's preeminent diabetes clinic & research center, to conduct cutting-edge research and hold educational seminars for dentists, medical doctors and medical staffs.

In this seminar, Sunstar will share some of the initiatives in Japan to fight against diabetes, and the importance of oral care to maintain the whole body health.

Dr Motonobu Matsumoto graduated from the graduate school of Agriculture, Osaka prefecture University. He joined Sunstar Japan in 1989. He was trained as the research fellow in Shiga University of Medical Science and received his PhD in Medicine in 2001. He is now the general manager of Asia/Japan R&D department in the Health and Beauty company of Sunstar group.

Previously, he was a researcher in R&D department of Sunstar Japan, focusing on the skin physiology and the development of anti-allergic materials (1989-2005). Then, he moved to Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical school, in order to find out the efficacy of the rural Asian diet on prevention of diabetes. During his stay in Joslin Diabetes Center, he learned the general knowledge and research methods of Diabetes (2005-2009). After going back to Japan, he was in charge of the development of functional food for diabetes patients (2009-2013). Following that, he was the head of R&D department of health and beauty business field in Sunstar Japan. Now, he is in charge of covering the Asia/Japan area as R&D general manager in health and beauty business field (2013-2017).

Dr Atsushi Ishikado graduated from the Postgraduate school, Kyoto Pharmaceutical University. He joined Sunstar Japan in 1996. He was trained as the research fellow in Shiga University of Medical Science, and received his PhD in Medicine in 2011. He is now the senior researcher of Health Care R&D department in the Health and Beauty company of Sunstar group.

He has been engaged in the research and development of functional foods. He also has extensive experience in collaborating with many academic institutions for clinical evidence and product development. He has worked as a research fellow in Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical school from 2014 to 2017.

Now, Dr Atsushi Ishikado is working on the products development of functional foods for pre-diabetic and diabetic people in Asian countries, including Japan.

Mr Fumihiro Awashima graduated from the Applied Biology department of Kyoto Institute Technology. He joined the Dental business department of Sunstar Japan in 1992, and moved to the Corporate Marketing department of Sunstar Japan in 2001. Following that, he transferred to the Oral Care Marketing department of Sunstar Japan in 2003, and later to the EMEA Oral Care Marketing of Sunstar Suisse SA in 2007. Since 2015, he is the general manager of Asia/Japan Oral Care Marketing of Sunstar Japan.
