The Embassy of Japan in Singapore – Japan Creative Centre (JCC) will be screening a documentary entitled "Fukushima Hula Girls" as part of its 45th JCC Cinema, as well as a 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake 5th Anniversary Commemorative Event. Please register with us early and come down to JCC to enjoy the documentary!


Film Synopsis


This documentary was created after a devastating earthquake which occurred on 11th March 2011 in Japan including Iwaki city. The city is the home to the 'Hula Girls' dance troupe of a beautiful hotel resort 'Spa Resorts Hawaiians', located close to Fukushima Nuclear Power Plants. After the earthquake that shook the whole city, the people including the 'Hula Girls' took initiative to reconstruct their beloved hometown. The story tells us how they faced everyday living with the energy issues and how they struggled until the re-opening of “Spa Resort Hawaiians”

About The Director


Masaki Kobayashi

Mr Kobayashi was born in 1966, and has directed many TV dramas, TV documentaries, and Commercials, including feature films “TAKI 183” (2005), CG film “Ski Jump Pairs, Road to Torino 2006” (2006). The movie has received official invitation to the 35th Rotterdam International Film Festival. His feature film “Hula Girls" (2006) was a box office smash hit in Japan.

Jake Shimabukuro

Mr Shimabukuro was born 1976 in Hawaii, he is one of the leading Ukulele innovator in both Hawaii and Japan. He has composed the music for “Hula Girls" (2006).


About The Narrator


Yu Aoi

Ms Aoi was born in 1985, she is one of the most popular and talented actresses in Japan. She has worked with many Japanese acclaimed directors for “All About Lily Chou-Chou” (2001) with Shunji Iwai, “Tokyo” (2008) with Bong Joon-ho, “Brother” (2010) with Yoji Yamada and others. She has acted as one of leading actresses of “Hula Girls" (2006) to support Fukushima's Reconstruction.
