On 22 January 2016, the CEO and founder of Astroscale Mr Nobu Okada presented a science and technology lecture at Japan Creative Centre (JCC) on how business is taking the innovation in space to the next level. As part of the SJ50 (50th Anniversary of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic Relations) and our first space related event this year, the lecture which focused about the problem of space debris the industry is facing and the solutions they have, had a whelming response attracting many Japanese and space lovers to come forward.

The universe is the place you should be active (宇宙は君達の活躍するところ) – starting off with a message written to him by Japanese Astronaut Mr Mamoru Mohri on what keeps his passion for space going, Mr Okada firstly introduced to the audience the history of space development over the past 50 years, primarily on how it went from military, science and government level with super large capital to business and start-up level with mid-size capital today, and emphasised how space and satellites are related closely to us, such weather forecast, television broadcasting and Global Positioning System (GPS) we used in our everyday lives.

Following which, Mr Okada introduced about the existence of defunct man-made objects orbiting around the earth today known as space debris. He spoke about how the debris are being created and its consequences on endangering human’s development and exploration of the space. Using graphics to elaborate, Mr Okada explained the amount and sizes of space debris out at the orbit, how they classify and identify the more critical ones to clear, including the development of debris removal and catcher satellites. Currently, IDEA OSG 1 – the world first small debris mapping developed by Astroscale – will be in place this year to monitor orbital debris of the sub-millimeter region in real time.

Ending the lecture, Mr Okada showcased the Lunar Dream Capsule manufactured in collaboration with Japanese sports drink Pocari Sweat by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. It is a small aluminium can that will deliver powdered drink mix and messages from children to the moon’s cratered surface if water is ever found there. Calling themselves space sweepers, Astroscale is a Singapore-based satellite services company and with the mission to contribute towards the sustainable use of the space environment, it is an eye-opening lecture that raises one’s public awareness about space environment issues and what we start doing for the next generation.
