On 29 August, JCC welcomed renowned Singaporean filmmaker and Festival Ambassador for the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) 2026 Mr Eric Khoo as well as his producer Ms Tan Fong Cheng for a special prelude masterclass leading up to JFF2026.

Moderated by Mr Deepagcharan Chandran, Mr Eric Khoo and Ms Tan Fong Cheng shared their experiences working in the film industry and in Singapore-Japan co-productions in both their respective capacities as a filmmaker and a producer. The audience also got a look behind the scenes of Mr Eric Khoo’s iconic Singapore-Japanese titles — Tatsumi (2011), Ramen Teh (2018) and Spirit World (2024). Mr Eric Khoo also shared special inside stories from when he was working on those films.

The floor was then opened for an engaging Q&A session, where Mr Eric Khoo and Ms Tan Fong Cheng shared insights on filming and producing a film in Japan. Furthermore, they added how film can be an effective medium for cultural exchange through the stories which are told, and the interactions filmmakers are engaged in while filming.

To conclude the session, Singapore Film Society (SFS) Chairman Mr Kenneth Tan gave a sneak peek to the JFF2026 programme, which will include the three films by Mr Eric Khoo and also Kurosawa Kiyoshi's highly anticipated period piece The Samurai and the Prisoner (2026).
