A fascinating lecture on the history of Kimono and Yukata was held at JCC on Friday, 14 August, by Mr Nagasaki Iwao, Deputy Director of Marubeni Gallery in Japan and a specialist in Japanese textiles and costumes.
To a full house, Mr Nagasaki traced the history and evolution of these iconic garments, including the meanings behind different terms, and changes in colours and patterns over time. He also discussed some of the traditional and contemporary customs, etiquette and occasions for wearing Kimono and Yukata in Japan. The lively Q&A session that followed featured many audience questions, ranging from the differences between women’s and men’s Kimono, to guidance on Kimono and Yukata dressing for Singapore’s hot and rainy climate. It was an informative evening of learning and appreciating Japan’s rich textile and cultural heritage. Even in sunny Singapore, why not step out in a breezy Yukata today? |
