Reflections on Children's Picture Books from Singapore, Malaysia and Japan: A research presentation from the Japan Foundation Fellowship for Arts and Culture in Asia

Ms Laura Peh, a Japan Foundation Fellow for Arts and Culture, presented her research on children’s picture books at JCC on 12 August.
With her research question "Who Tells the Story? Authorship, Authencity, and Representation in Children's Picture Books", Ms Peh talked about findings from her fieldwork in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Itabashi, Tokyo, Japan. She shared that each country’s picture books have their own unique focus, such as the multicultural representation in Malaysia and the visually poignant illustrations in Japan. She also reflected on how childhood is influenced by the changes in the global world and that the book ecosystem, — spanning creators, publishers, libraries, booksellers, collections and young readers — is essential for how societies negotiate what children should know about the world. During the Q&A, guests asked questions about, among others, what she found most interesting about children’s books in Malaysia and Japan and her thoughts on the evolution of children’s books throughout different generations. Ms Peh concluded her presentation by introducing the Japanese Board on Books for Young People (JBBY), which she visited in Tokyo, and by previewing the 2027 International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY ) Asia Pacific Regional Conference, to be held 10 – 11 July 2027 in Itabashi, Tokyo.
