JCC held a conference titled “Tokyo Re-design: Revitalisation of local community through Sento bathhouses” on 16 August 2025. The conference opened with an address from Dr Shin Yokoo, Senior Lecturer at the National University of Singapore, gave an overview of both 2024 and 2025 Summer Programmes, followed by a lecture on the history of Japan’s bathhouses and bathing culture over the world as a space for the community to mingle and gather by Singapore based architect duo Ms New Yi Tian and Mr Kawakami Hiroshi of New & Kawakami Architects.
Students from the National University of Singapore led the sharing of their participation in the 2025 Summer Programme in Japan in collaboration with students from the Tokyo University of Science, exploring the theme of “What is the Singaporean Sento?” in the context of local third places that serve as a place for community revitalisation and civic engagement.
The conference also saw participation from Associate Professor Nishida Osamu from the Tokyo University of Science, where he shared his design process of creating a dormitory for international students and how features of the dormitory can facilitate social exchange. The conference ended with closing remarks from Professor Jeffery Hou of NUS, Head of Department at the Department of Architecture.
There was in-depth engagement between the students and audience, where several interesting questions were raised from the floor at the Q&A sessions as well as conversations and examples during the networking reception.
