Director's Message

Trying to follow the two special bears, Golden Rule and Global Ethic, at the United Buddy Bears Opening, Gardens by the Bay.
Dear Friends of JCC,

Konnichiwa!

Last month’s events celebrated both modern innovation and traditional culture. On one hand, we were given food for thought about re-designing sento bathhouses to revitalise the local community, as well as the colourful relationship between contemporary art, tokusatsu and video game culture through a Japanese lens. Both topics were new and refreshing to me, and I am sure many participants enjoyed learning from new perspectives.

Meanwhile, JCC also highlighted the charms of Japan’s traditional culture with an array of events, including what Hamamatsu City has to offer, and the traditional music of shamisen and kotsuzumi. Such events are always popular with Singaporeans, which is heartening to see. It is important to carry on our traditions, so the overwhelming response from everyone is certainly encouraging.

Besides that, we held our annual Study in Japan seminar in person at JCC. We were pleased to see so much interest from young students, looking into the possibility of pursuing their further studies in Japan. JCC still has an online Study in Japan seminar planned in October as well, so those who missed out can still attend that session.

Last but certainly not the least, I am delighted to share that Mr Kanze Yoshimasa, a Noh actor who has been providing lessons at the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) in Singapore for over 20 years, was awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation today. This is in recognition of his significant contributions to cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Singapore through Noh. My warmest congratulations to Mr Kanze!
