On 28 August, JCC hosted artists and curators from the ART BIT MATRIX - TOKUSATSU to VIDEO GAME - exhibition for a talk exploring the relationship between contemporary art, tokusatsu (live-action films and television dramas that heavily utilise special effects) and video games. Artist curators Nakagawa Daichi, Takakurakazuki and Toyokawa Yasutaka gave a brief introduction on their artistic careers and talked about the two exhibitions – the art bit exhibition series in Hotel Anteroom Kyoto and the Character Matrix exhibition – which unified to become the ART BIT MATRIX exhibition. They also introduced the artists in the exhibition and talked about how each artist’s craft complemented the exhibition.

This was then followed by a roundtable discussion by six of the exhibiting artists – Aoyama Yume, Contact Gonzo, Hirayama Takumi, Nishigaki Hayaki, Nishijima Daisuke and Tanimura Machin Romana – where they had a conversation about their creative influences in contemporary art, tokusatsu and video games.

After the talk, guests were able to experience two of the video games that will be showcased in the exhibition – MANIYUGI TOKOYO by Takakurakazuki and SPACE INVADIAN by Nishijima Daisuke. They also had a chance to interact with the artists, asking them questions about their craft and their artistic influences.

ART BIT MATRIX - TOKUSATSU to VIDEO GAME – is currently exhibiting at Mizuma Gallery from 29 August to 19 October. For more details about the exhibition, please visit https://www.mizuma.sg/exhibitions/2025/07/30/art-bit-matrix-tokusatsu-to-videogame/
