On 24 August 2024, JCC had the honour of inviting 13th Grand Master of Enshu Sado School Mr Sojitsu Kobori for the sixth installation of JCC’s 15th Anniversary Talk Series, to share about Enshu style of Japanese tea ceremony. JCC Director Ms Akiko Kawabe was present to kickstart the talk. The Grand Master spoke about the history and background of Enshu Sado School, as well as how kirei-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic of gracefulness and simplicity, is tied to the spirit of Enshu Sado. He also explained about the different aspects of Japanese tea ceremony, such as utensils and the proper way of drinking a bowl of tea, during the tea ceremony demonstration by his daughter.

In the afternoon, there was the tea ceremony demonstration and explanation, which were led by NUS Sado Club.

For both sessions, audience had the opportunity to enjoy a bowl of tea and ask the Grand Master further questions during the Q&A session. Many varieties of questions were raised, and the Grand Master graciously answered each question. This event coincided with the 35th anniversary of Enshu Sado School at NUS, and the collaboration between Enshu and NUS Department of Japanese Studies, and an exhibition detailing the 35-year long history was held at JCC too.
