Dear Friends of JCC,
Konnichiwa!
August is the height of the summer heat in Japan (and as reported it was especially hot this year!) with many vibrant summer festivals. As for JCC, we also kept the heat up with events that highlighted the various facets of Japan and Japanese culture, ranging from performance of traditional musical instruments, shamisen and kotsuzumi, paired with elegant Nihonbuyo, the fusion of Japanese ceramics with Singaporean floral design, the world of kirei-sabi in Enshu style Japanese tea ceremony to a guiding seminar on studying in Japan.
In the way of tea events, we commemorated the 35th anniversary of Enshu Sado School at NUS together with JCC15, with programmes held respectively at NUS and JCC, and welcomed the 13th Grand Master of Enshu Sado School Mr Sojitsu Kobori. His lecture, featuring the history and specificities of Sado and Enshu-ryu in particular, was very intriguing to me. It was an honour for JCC to have Oiemoto (お家元)in our 15th anniversary talk series, and to celebrate these milestones with our long-time partners through something as simple and profound as a bowl of tea.
What was also memorable in August for me was meeting MYAKU-MYAKU, the official character for the World Expo 2025 Osaka. The event also gave me an insight into what to look forward to, and I’m sure that hearing more about the plans for the World Expo and the Singapore Pavilion has raised everyone’s excitement and desire to visit in 2025.
Talking about visiting Japan, have you already seen the magnificent photos of Japanese sceneries taken by Singaporean friends on their visits to Japan? Those photos, selected out of more than 1,000 shots submitted to the recent competition, are on display in JCC until 13 September. Please come and immerse yourselves in the sceneries of each of the four seasons of Japan!
