JCC Cinema 75: My Father is the Grand Master & The Heart of Cha-no-yu Talk

Grand Master speaking at NUS
As part of commemorating the 30th anniversary of Enshu Sado School at NUS, a two-day event was held at National University of Singapore (NUS) and JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on 23 and 24 August 2019 respectively.

Our JCC Cinema 75: My Father is the Grand Master was screened at NUS which allowed the audience to understand and appreciate 'wabi-sabi' and the spirit of 'omotenashi', as well as the life and work of Mr Sojitsu Kobori, the 13th Grand Master of the Enshu Sado School, over the span of 3 years. The Grand Master was also at the screening and had an in-depth and engaging Q&A session with the audience.

‘The Heart of Cha-no-yu’ – a talk and tea ceremony was conducted at JCC the next day, where the Grand Master spoke about the history and background of Enshu Sado School, and also the different aspects of tea, from things such as tea leaves, utensils to the ethics, beauty and proper way of drinking a bowl of tea. The audience also had the opportunity to interact with the Grand Master, as well as to see a tea ceremony demonstration by NUS Sado Club and have a bowl of tea.

The event was also a happy occasion to celebrate the commendation by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan of the Grand Master in recognition of his significant contributions toward cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Singapore through tea, especially in regard to his contribution to NUS for almost 30 years, as well as the 10th anniversary of JCC (Japan Creative Centre) and 90th anniversary of NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).
