A demonstration on how to put on a yukata. |
|
On Saturday, 13th August 2016 a yukata workshop was jointly presented by JCC and Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association (JETAA) at JCC.
The yukata, known to be a symbol of summer is a traditional Japanese costume, typically worn during natsu matsuri (summer festival). Its assembly is less formal than a kimono, a formal traditional Japanese costume. As the growing number of Singaporean visitors to Japan from Singapore increase year after year, many Singaporeans who are fond of the Japanese culture would inevitably fall in love with the exquisite traditional costumes. |
Conducting the workshop was Ms Nathalie Ng, ex-JET participant and President of JETAA. Having resided in Shizuoka Prefecture as a participant, she started wearing the yukata at a young age. Since then, her interest for the traditional costume grew and adds any attractive finds to her growing collection. Nathalie’s inspiring in-depth knowledge on current yukata trends as well as the history, allowed the participants of more than 50 to master the art of the beautiful yukata.
JCC Director Ms Misako Ito graced the workshop, adorning a stunning white and purple yukata. Helping the participants during the hands-on session, all were eager to ask her many questions about the Japanese tradition. |

Ultimately perfecting their attire for many photo sessions during the workshop, many were enthusiastic about the Summer Festival 2016, which was held on Saturday, 20th August. The workshop served as a great opportunity for beginners to learn various yukata tips and tricks. |
