Cool Roofs for Net Zero Heritage in Asia’s Hot, Humid Climate: Research and Development of V Shaped Terracotta Tiles for Conservation of Traditional Houses in Singapore

Panel discussion and Q&A
JCC hosted Dr Kinoshita Hikaru of Kansai University and Mr Kelvin Ang of NUS Architectural Conservation (NUS-ArClab) on 22 September 2026, where they shared about the joint project between National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Architectural Conservation Laboratory (ArClab) and Kansai University. The project aims to develop a V-shaped terracotta roof tile that improves thermal performance using Japanese tile laying and ceramic making techniques. It also explores how this particular roof tile can serve as a model for cool roofs in Singapore and Southeast Asia amidst a warmer climate and potentially help bring down the need for air-conditioning.

The presentations were followed by a panel discussion and an engaging Q&A session, which saw lively participation from the audience.
