On 5 September, JCC held shogi workshops for beginners and experienced shogi players. Under the guidance of 8 professional shogi players from Japan Shogi Association, participants of all ages enjoyed several games of shogi at their own pace. The session was conducted by Ms Kitao Madoka, who played in the women’s professional shogi players league for 23 years and is the founder of Nekomado, a private company that promotes shogi. Mr Abe Keiichi, the Head of Singapore branch of the Japan Shogi Association, provided support and English interpretation.

During the sessions, the two competitors of the 73rd Oza Championship, Mr Fujii Sota Oza and Mr Ito Takumi Eiou, made a surprise appearance, much to the participants’ delight. The two prominent players were happy to see the interest in shogi in Singapore and gave words of encouragement to those who were learning to play. It seems that shogi is a growing presence that is here to stay!
