Mr Paul Noritaka Tange, Chairman of Tange Associates, held a talk on The Tange Approach to Architecture and Cities at JCC on Tuesday, 17 September, as part of our 15th Anniversary Talk Series this year. H.E. Ambassador Hiroshi Ishikawa firstly welcomed the audience with his opening remarks and spoke about how both Mr Tange and his late father Mr Kenzo Tange have contributed to the friendship between Singapore and Japan through city design and architecture that spanned over 4 decades.
Following which, Mr Tange shared how they have designed and created spaces, architectures, and cities based on their studies into these inter-relationships and their beliefs about how these interactions would need to be developed by showcasing their blueprints and completed projects in Singapore, Japan, and other countries. From the presentation of projects like the urban design of Marina South, and the iconic UOB Plaza to more recent collaborations such as Orchard Gateway, the audience could understand that the Tanges' architectural vision has significantly contributed to Singapore’s cityscape. He also spoke about the legacy of his late father and how his father’s encounter with the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the former Prime Minister of Singapore, sparked their friendship and relationship with Singapore.
The talk was followed by a Q&A session where the members of the audience had the exclusive opportunity to speak and interact with Mr Tange directly. Many insightful and interesting questions were raised from the floor.
