JCC had a fun-filled day of excitement and laugher with Kumamon, the official PR character of Kumamoto Prefecture, last Friday! Mr Tomohiro Tsugawa, Deputy Director-General, Office of the Governor of Kumamoto Prefectural Government who came from Japan with Kumamon, kick-started each of the three sessions and welcomed all the guests at JCC, followed by an introduction on the beauty of Kumamoto Prefecture by the Director of Kumamoto Representative Office in Singapore, Mr Yuji Yamaguchi.
In the 1st session, Let’s have fun and design Kumamon!, children coloured and designed their very own special Kumamon through their imaginations and creativity, whereas participants at the 2nd session, Let’s dance with Kumamon, were taught how to dance Kumamon Taiso – Kumamon’s signature moves – alongside with Kumamon himself!
The 3rd session, Valuing Heritage in Contemporary Japan, was a series of presentations by NUS students who participated in the 2024 NUS Field Study Trip to Kumamoto Prefecture. Led by NUS Department of Japanese Studies lecturer Dr Chris McMorran, 4 students shared about their journey, experiences, and thoughts of their Kumamoto trip from a 'heritage' perspective in contemporary Japan, and many enthusiastic questions were raised and answered.
All the guests had the exclusive opportunity to interact and take a photo with Kumamon. Everyone also brought back home a printed photo of them with Kumamon, courtesy of Canon, and a goodie bag from Kumamoto prefecture.
