The opening ceremony of the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) 2024 was held at Shaw Theatres Lido on 26 September with the premiere screening of ALL THE LONG NIGHTS, directed by filmmaker Mr Sho Miyake, who received the 2024 Kurosawa Akira Award at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). In attendance together with H.E Ambassador Hiroshi Ishikawa was our Guest of Honour Ms Lee Weimin, Deputy Director-General of the Northeast Asia Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore, as well as the movie’s film editor Ms Keiko Okawa, who has worked closely with Director Miyake in two of his recent films. Ms Okawa herself is a filmmaker specialising in documentaries, and she shared about her film editing process during the post-show Q&A moderated by Mr Kenneth Tan, Chairman of the Singapore Film Society (SFS).

The oldest country-based film festivals in Singapore, JFF has been a gateway for many into the wondrous world of Japanese cinema and culture since 1983. This year’s programme features a rich tapestry of films that honour cinematic legacies while embracing contemporary narratives surrounding the theme of “Continuity”. From classics such as Akira Kurosawa’s RASHOMON (1950) and SEVEN SAMURAI (1954), Yoshimitsu Morita’s FAMILY GAME (1983) to rising favourites like Yoji Yamada’s MOM, IS THAT YOU? (2023) and Gakuryu Ishii’s THE BOX MAN (2024), JFF is never short on Japanese movies worth discovering! Catch the second screening of ALL THE LONG NIGHTS on 4 October 2024 as well.

JFF will be ongoing through 20 October 2024. For more details and to get your tickets for the showings, please visit https://jff.sg/.
