The opening ceremony of “Chado – The Spirit of the Way of Tea –“ exhibition was held at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on 3 September. The ceremony started with speeches by H.E. Ambassador Jun Yamazaki, Mr. Tan Jong Lek, Vice President of Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association, and Mr. Stanley Chng, Founder of Water and Ink Singapore Pte Ltd. Following the speeches, Ms. Sochoku Nakabayashi, Chief Administrator of Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association, presented a brief history of the hanging scrolls (kakemono), as well as the evolution of the philosophy and the significance of Chado. Guests were also treated with a serving of the actual tea.
The exhibition was held till 17 September, and featured the utensils used in Chado and the underlying history, culture, and spirit, which is called the Way of Tea. The exhibit also showcased a series of ink paintings by Mr. Stanley Chng, providing a window into the masterpieces of Hasegawa Tohaku, one of the most influential painters of the Azuchi-Momoyama/pre-Edo period.
