On 2nd September 2016, Friday, JCC had the pleasure to host the opening ceremony of Memories in Clay: Mindscape. This exhibition showcases the inspirational works created by Mr Ken Mihara, one of the frontrunners of contemporary Japanese ceramics. His timeless pieces emit the essence of wabi-sabi (a Japanese aesthetic focusing on the acceptance of transience and imperfection). |
Mr Ken Mihara grew up surrounded by the majestic nature of Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Izumo is also steeped deeply in the mysticisms of ancient Shinto lore. Despite dramatically changing styles over the years, Mr Ken Mihara’s works remain heavily influenced by the natural and mythical aspects of his hometown.
However, his solemn stoneware creations are far more than odes to nature. Rather, his works are a window into the artist’s soul and the tangible self-expressions that capture the Ken Mihara of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

The opening ceremony began with a welcome speech by JCC Director Ms Misako Ito. She noted that this exhibition was made possible with the joint action of Singapore’s Mulan Gallery and Japan’s 酉福ギャラリー Yufuku Gallery. As such, it was truly a pleasure to witness the collaboration between the two galleries from Japan and Singapore with the same passion, in the year of SJ50.
This was followed by Mr Ken Mihara’s welcome remarks, who then presented Ms Misako Ito a pottery gift, as a token to the Embassy of Japan as proof of the strong cultural ties and friendship between Singapore and Japan.
|
Mr Wahei Aoyama, Owner & Director of Yufuku Gallery, also gave his welcome remarks to the many guests from the arts and culture field, including renowned master potter Dr Iskandar Jalil and former Ambassador Haruhisa Takeuchi.
This exhibition is now running at Mulan Gallery from 20th September to 15th October 2016, so be sure to drop by to view these sublime creations with your own eyes.
