Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135 held a demonstration at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on 27 September 2016 during their SJ50 Flower Exhibition: A Celebration of Friendship through Ikebana in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic Relations. Conducted by Datin Ong Kid Ching, President of Johor Bahru Chapter 235 and award-winning Ikebana instructor Ms Momoko Emmott, the event had an overwhelming response with guests not only from Singapore, but also overseas as far as Pakistan.

JCC Director Ms Misako Ito and President of Singapore Chapter 135 Ms Peggy Loh were also at the event to welcome the guests, as well as to introduce the symbol of the exhibition in light of this year’s SJ50. Using flowers ranging from Birds of Paradise to Orchid with some colours signifying our two countries, Datin Ong presented the Ohara style of Ikebana arrangement, while Ms Momoko demonstrated the Ryusei-ha style.

A lucky draw was followed at the event, where two of the guests had the opportunity to bring back two of the flower arrangements made by the demonstrators. Many of the guests continued to stay after the event with light refreshments, where they enjoyed the rest of the flower arrangements and interacted with other Ikebana members.

A total of 14 beautiful flowers arrangements created by members of the Singapore Chapter were showcased at the exhibition, with each dedicated to the joyous occasion of SJ50. Also seen as a strong symbol of friendship between Singapore and Japan, the Singapore Chapter 135 was founded in 1968, with the consistent motto of ‘Friendship Though Flowers’. Its parent organisation Ikebana International was founded in 1956 with a commitment to increase international understanding through the appreciation of Ikebana - the Japanese art of flower arranging. Headquartered in Tokyo, I.I. has a total of 161 global chapters with approximately 7,600 members in over 50 countries.
