JET Programme Information Session

An information session on the Japan Exchange & Teaching Programme (JET) was conducted on Friday, 16th October at the Japan Creative Centre (JCC) with a full house. Providing an opportunity for foreigners to teach in Japan, the programme was started in 1987 with the purpose of increasing mutual understanding between the people of Japan and other nations. It aims to promote internationalisation in Japan’s local communities by helping to improve foreign language education and developing international exchange at the community level.

Representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Singapore and CLAIR Singapore provided useful info about the outline of the JET Program and the application process at the session. Together with members of JET Alumni Association (JETAA) Singapore and former JET participants, the audience was intrigued by the interesting and colorful experiences shared the former participants have been through from both types positions: ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) and CIR (Coordinator for International Relations). At the end of the session, there was also an opportunity to interact with the presenters and former participants to answer questions about the programme the audiences might have.

2015 marks the 29th year of the JET Programme. Over the past 29 years, it has seen significant growth, from its original 848 participants from 4 countries in 1987, to 4,786 participants from 43 countries at present. Now, approximately 1,000 local public organisations (contracting organisations), including all 47 prefectures and 20 designated cities, are accepting JET Programme participants. The application for the 2016

JET Programme is currently open from now till 20th November 2015. Click here for more information.
