Opening & Demonstration of Ikebana Singapore: Flowers of Singapore

The Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135 conducted an exhibition, Flowers of Singapore in celebration of Singapore Botanic Gardens being declared a cultural site of UNESCO World Heritage 2015. The exhibition held from 21st to 24th October consisted an opening ceremony and a demonstration session.

The Ikebana International was founded in 1956 with a commitment to increase international understanding through the appreciation of traditional Japanese floral art, and the Singapore Chapter was later established in June 1968. The opening ceremony on Wednesday, 21st October gathered Ikebana enthusiasts and saw speeches from JCC Director Ms Misako Ito and Ikebana International Singapore President Ms Peggy Low.

The final day of the exhibition invited Ms Josephine Chia – a certified Sogetsu school teacher and a Komon, as well as Ms Kathreen Meyer-Ohle – Second Associate Master of Ohara school. The audience were instantly captivated by the fast paced professionalism of the masters who in short moments assembled beautiful masterpieces one after another.

The floral arrangements during the exhibition focused on uniquely Singapore flowers such as the national flower Orchids, Ginger flower and Heliconias. With much feedback from guests as well as walk-in visitors during the exhibition period, the floral pieces were a perfect representation of the 50th Anniversary of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic Relations (SJ50).
