Dear Friends of JCC,
Konnichiwa!
November has arrived, and autumn will soon reach its peak in Japan with the arrival of autumn foliage. For those with plans to travel to Japan, you can expect to enjoy the gorgeous red and yellow leaves throughout this month in different regions. For those without any plans, I hope that you were able to appreciate a taste of fall’s beauty at JCC during our various Ikebana events, including the annual exhibition by Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135, which showcased ikebana arrangements inspired by autumn colours and textures.
Besides that, we explored niche areas such as an extensive masterclass by trailblazing film director Mr Gakuryu Ishii, and an enlightening talk about Shojin Ryori by Ms Mari Fujii, an expert on the exquisite art of traditional Japanese vegetarian cuisine. I heard that many curious questions were raised in both events, and participants even approached the speakers after the event for further queries. It is always a welcoming sight to see a high level of interest in Japanese culture, and I hope each participant acquired much takeaway either about the aesthetic and philosophy of filmmaking, or about the rich history and practical cooking skills of Shojin Ryori.
We also held our final Study in Japan webinar for the year, as well as two JET Programme briefing sessions. I’m sure that the respective sessions illuminated the numerous opportunities that are available for everyone who is keen to study or work in Japan. In fact, the deadline for the JET Programme is fast approaching, so I’d like to remind potential applicants to please submit your documents by 8 November!
