Directors' Masterclasses @ Japanese Film Festival 2023

In conjunction with our Japanese Film Festival SG 2023, JCC held two exclusive masterclasses. The first one by Mr. Jasper Sharp on J-horror (Japanese horror films) phenomenon was held on Saturday, 7 October 2023. Jasper, who flew into Singapore specially for our festival, is a filmmaker, curator, and author specialising in Japanese cinema.

He gave an in-depth explanation and analysis of the Western perspective of J-Horror, as well as a brief history of it, and how it became popular and further influenced the horror film making in UK, Europe, and other parts of Asia. Jasper also shared about the concepts and stories behind the making of his documentary, “The J-Horror Virus,” which was also screened at this year’s JFF.

The masterclass ended with a Q&A session moderated by our JFF programmer, Mr. Deepagcharan Chandran from the Singapore Film Society. Many participants raised interesting questions and continued to interact with Jasper after the event.

The second masterclass on independent filmmaking in Japan was conducted at JCC by film director Mr. Lim Kah Wai on Saturday, 14 October 2023 as part of our Japanese Film Festival SG 2023. The Osaka-based Malaysian director came specially to Singapore for his film, "Your Lovely Smile," which was screened at our festival last week.

Lim Kah Wai firstly shared about his background and filming odyssey, how he went from being an electrical engineering graduate and network engineer in Japan to studying directing at the Beijing Film Academy and finally returning to Japan to make films. He also discussed about the independent filmmaking movement in Japan, as well as the challenges facing the industry and himself. The film director also gave brief introductions to some of his previous films and the stories behind their productions. His films mostly focus on the relationships between various nationalities and communities living in Japan, a subject that is also personal to him.

Our JFF programmer Mr. Deepagcharan Chandran from the Singapore Film Society moderated a Q&A session with the film director, where many in-depth and interesting questions were raised by the participants.
