We were delighted to have world-renowned jewellery designer, Ms Tomoko Kodera, give a talk entitled “An Appreciation of Japanese Culture Through Conceptual Jewellery” on 10 October 2018 at the National Design Centre. Held in conjunction with the designer’s participation in the Jeweluxe Singapore 2018, Ms Kodera talked about her inspiration for her unique jewellery designs, which reflects her Japanese roots.
|
At the beginning, she explained that after piercing her ears, she wanted to wear something which represented herself, and hence aimed to become a jewellery designer. After which, she touched on four works of hers: the award-winning creation “Rice Husks”, “Bento”, “a moment”, and “Snowing Night”. Ms Kodera gave further insight about each of its design process, and actual crafting and technique. For example, she decided to use rice husks as a motif, as they were a part of nature which gets caught on people’s clothes and it unconsciously shows their actions and preferences, such as where they were or what they were doing. She also connected her individual creations with her different memories of everyday life, such as the excitement of opening a bento made by her mother. She drew inspiration from origami wrapping methods, to help to replicate the moment of opening the lid of the bento.
