The opening ceremony the art exhibition titled “Kirié: The Art of Japanese Paper Cutting” by Mr Kubo Shu, in collaboration with the Singapore Arts Club, was held at The Arts House on Tuesday, 25th October 2016. Opening remarks were presented by JTI Singapore’s General Manager, Ms Julia Gough, H.E. Ambassador Kenji Shinoda and the Artist, Mr Kubo. |
Born in Yamaguchi, Japan, Mr Kubo studied architecture in university, where he first began exploring the art of Kirié (Japanese paper cutting). His paper works often depict vibrant representations of cultural symbols, and expresses how he learns and lives his freedom, strength, and tenderness from the world of nature.
He held his first personal exhibition at a gallery in Osaka in 1977. Since then, he has been expanding his exhibition and gallery works throughout Japan.

In April 2008, his exhibition held in New York received great praise, and with it he has caught the attention of a new generation. He has since done exhibitions in Russia, USA, and with the Japan Foundation in Malaysia. In 2009, he was appointed as Special Advisor for Cultural Exchange by Japan’s Agency of Cultural Affairs, and actively represents Japanese culture around the world.
Mr Kubo also joined the SJ50 Matsuri on 29th October 2016, at the Singapore Arts Club booth, where visitors were able to experience a short workshop from him and view some of his selected art works |
