Learn the Art of Japanese Paper Cutting

Mr Kubo Shu introducing more about the craft.
A workshop on Kirié (Japanese paper cutting) by Mr Kubo Shu was held on Wednesday, 26th October 2016. Due to overwhelming response, an additional session was held on Thursday, 27th October 2016. Both workshop sessions took place at The Arts House, where the artist’s selected works were on display as part of the art exhibition titled “Kirié: The Art of Japanese Paper Cutting”. The exhibition was held from 25th to 28th October 2016.

Mr Kubo, who flew specially from Japan, started the session with an introduction to his craft. He then provided the workshop participants with step-by-step instructions to cut and create their Kirié artwork. Besides providing tips on how to perfect their paper cutting craft, Mr Kubo also personally guided the participants when necessary. After the workshop, participants had the opportunity to approach Mr Kubo to ask him more questions, and even get his autograph on their finished artwork.

Mr Kubo uses washi in his work, a handmade paper from raw plant material, and layers them to create vividly-coloured illustrations of the changing seasons and delicious cuisine of Japan. Heavily involved in the revival of Kirié, the artist with over 40 years of experience also incorporates other materials in his work – such as pastel, acrylic paint, fabric and sand, which elevates the elegant traditional art form.
