JCC co-organised a Kurokawa Noh lecture and demonstration event with The Japan Foundation on 29 April, in cooperation with the Kurokawa Noh Preservation Society. Associate Professor Lim Beng Choo, Head of Japanese Studies at the National University of Singapore, delivered a comprehensive lecture about the spiritual foundations and aesthetic qualities of Kurokawa Noh. Originating from Tsuruoka City in Yamagata Prefecture, Kurokawa Noh has a distinct style that differs from the orthodox Noh performances that many people may be more familiar with.

Audience members also had the rare opportunity of trying on a Noh mask in person, as well as watching a short demonstration of Kurokawa Noh. The Kurokawa Noh troupe performed in Singapore as part of A Tapestry of Sacred Music Festival at Esplanade on 30 April and 1 May.

A welcome speech by JCC’s Cultural Officer Mr Yonekura Hidetaka

Remarks by Mr Shimane Tomoaki, Managing Director of Arts and Culture Department, The Japan Foundation.
