Konnichiwa!
The energy of springtime has kept JCC active this past April as we had a variety of events including an exhibition, talks, and seminars. In the first half of the month, we hosted a photography exhibition on Tsukiji Market. This exhibition by highly-lauded photographer and Fujifilm Ambassador Derrick Ong portrayed an intimate and nostalgic look at the popular fish market including some shots from the famous tuna auction, which has drawn attention from tourists and locals alike before it was moved to its location in Toyosu last October.
There was also a talk by KOSÉ; it was a fascinating and enlightening talk to share knowledge about various components of Japanese sake that will work effectively for skin care and whitening! It was also encouraging to see our guests asking many questions during the Q&A session on how the traditional technology of sake making can be applied to such modern inventions based on scientific research.
Late April JCC hosted a joint seminar held by three prestigious private Japanese universities. Many youths who are aspiring to pursue studying in Japan visited JCC to learn more about possible opportunities. I hope that JCC will be able to help provide students with more chances to find the strength of Japanese academia and specific features of various universities in Japan.
In May, we welcomed the beginning of a new era: Reiwa. Reiwa means “beautiful harmony” which implies “culture will be nurtured as people bring their hearts together in a beautiful manner.” Our activities to showcase Japan in May will be a reflection of the beauty of these venerable traditions. In early May, there will be an exhibition on the beautiful fabrics used in tea ceremonies by the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association. Following this exhibition, there will be an incense ceremony held by a Master from Japan.
