Struggling Cities: from Japanese Urban Projects in the 1960s was officially opened with a reception on Friday, 10 April 2017 at Nanyang Academic of Fine Arts (NAFA). Together with Guest of Honour Mr Tan Kok Hiang, Founding Director of Forum Architects Pte Ltd and special guest Professor Hikaru Kinoshita from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental and Urban Engineering of Kansai University, Osaka, Mr Naohiro Tsutsumi, Deputy Chief of Mission and JCC Acting Director, officiated the opening as one of the guests and spoke at the ceremony.

They all spoke about their own perspectives and experience with regards to architecture, and how Singapore has become a benchmark for urban development ever since her independence despite the limited land space. After which, Mr Chia Mia Chiang, President of NAFA and Dr Bridget Tracy Tan, Director, Institute of Southeast Asian Arts & Galleries of NAFA guided the speakers to tour around the exhibition.

Co-organised by JCC (Japan Creative Centre), The Japan Foundation and NAFA, it is a touring architectural and city exhibition by Naohiko Hino which takes a fresh look at proposals on the city that were put forward by Japanese architects in the 1960s when Japan saw a flourishing of ambitious ideas and activities in that arena. From architectural scale models to animation movies and slideshows, it analyses some of these radical proposals attempted to address the concerns of various countries around the world facing similar over-population issues; and how these ideas have been developed and assimilated into modern-day Tokyo.

Do not miss the exhibition, which will be running till Sunday, 14 May 2017 at NAFA Campus 1’s Ngee Ann Kongsi Gallery 1 & 2! For more information, please visit http://www.sg.emb-japan.go.jp/JCC/invite_struggling_cities_2017.html.
