A Japanese Tea Lecture and Demonstration by Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association (Urasenke Singapore) was held on Saturday, 30th April 2016 at Japan Creative Centre (JCC), as part of ‘The Way of Tea: Tea Culture of Singapore and Japan’ exhibition. Headed by Ms Sochoku Nakabayashi, Chief Administrator of Urasenke Singapore, the lecture and demonstration was conducted in 2 sessions that included a guided tour around the exhibition. An overwhelming response of more than 70 guests turned up for the event.

Ms Nakabayashi, accompanied by Ms Yoko Suzuki as the interpreter, spoke about the history, culture and etiquette of Chado – The Japanese Way of Tea and Urasenke that can be traced back to at least the 16th century, while two of its members – Mr Oscar Suzuki and Mr Christopher Li – demonstrated the authentic way of preparing Japanese Matcha Tea in front of the guests. Following which, guests were served and had the opportunity to taste the Japanese Sweets and Matcha Tea prepared by Urasenke Singapore.

Besides the lecture and demonstration, Mr Clarence Chua of Urasenke Singapore explained briefly about the different types of tea that were showcased at the exhibition, and gave a guided tour – particularly the aesthetics of Japanese Art in Chado by Dr Genshitsu Sen, the 15th Generation Grand Master of Urasenke. These includes the scrolls, utensils and tea-making table (tenchaban) that was used by Dr Genshitsu Sen, 15th Generation Grand Master of Urasenke during the Tea Dedication and Sharing for Friendship and World Peace held on Wednesday, 13th April 2016 at Asian Civilisations Museum.
