in comparison with Japanese Tea

Ms Okada demonstrating the authentic method of making Chinese tea A second lecture and demonstration, part of the ‘The Way of Tea: Tea Culture of Singapore and Japan Exhibition’ took place at Japan Creative Centre (JCC) on Saturday, 23rd April 2016. ‘Singapore’s Chinese Tea in Comparison with Japanese Tea’ was hosted by Liu Xiang Tea Craft who specialises in the art of Chinese tea serving.

Mr Lee Chee Keong (better known as Lee-sensei) is the master of Chinese tea and to over 30 guests, he presented the history and etiquette of Singapore’s lost Chinese tea culture. Joining Lee-sensei was Ms Okada and Ms Fukue, member of Liu Xiang Tea Craft who both demonstrated authentic and modern methods of Chinese tea serving in comparison with Japanese tea.

Ms Okada first demonstrated the traditional way of serving Chinese tea with Oolong Tea from Taiwan. Guests were delighted to witness an authentic tea serving process with exquisite Chinese tableware and were impressed especially during the cleaning ritual, which is rarely seen due to the loss of Chinese tea culture over time.

The modern method of Chinese tea serving was then demonstrated with Liu Xiang Jin Ya, a type of yellow tea by Ms Fukue, who beautifully arranged a beautiful red and white tea table decor that reflected the symbolic colours of the two countries and the SJ50 (50th Anniversary of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic Relations) spirit.
