Konnichiwa!
It’s finally spring again! Together with a myriad of blooms, the spring breeze brings with it a multitude of exciting programmes for our Friends of JCC.
February saw JCC involved in programmes that celebrated Singapore’s multi-ethnic community alongside Japanese aesthetics. We took part in Chinese New Year celebrations with the various Ikebana societies, where traditional Singaporean Chinese practices intertwined perfectly with the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement. It was lovely to see flowers arranged using Japanese techniques, but with a distinctively local and regional twist.
JCC also engaged with the Singaporean Muslim community by hosting a sharing session with the Singaporean participants of the Japan Foundation-led programme Talk About Muslims (TAMU). They shared several observations and experiences they’ve had as Muslims travelling in Japan. Japanese companies Nissin and JNTO also participated in the session, presenting the Japanese perspective and sharing with the guests different ways in which Japan is improving to become a more Muslim-friendly tourist destination. These programmes in February were heartening and important, as it facilitated dialogue and created deeper bonds between the Singaporean and Japanese community.
March signals the beginning of the cherry blossom season. Back in Japan, there is a lot of excitement and anticipation over when the buds will bloom and cover the landscape in a sea of pink. Here in Singapore, we are buzzing in anticipation as well, as the Sakura Matsuri will be returning once again to Gardens By The Bay and JCC will be participating in the festivities as a Programme Partner!! So, do come down and say hi!
In addition to the Sakura Matsuri, JCC will also be hosting renowned digital art collective teamLab for a talk, and present a film at the Happiness Film Festival as well! It is shaping up to be a month blooming with a lot of activity, and so I encourage everyone to join us as a Friend of JCC to get the latest information of the activities that we will be involved in. Alternatively, you may also like us on our Facebook page! We look forward to seeing you soon at our events!
