A lecture and performance entitled KIMONO: Comparison & Alternation was held at both JCC (Japan Creative Centre) and library@esplanade on 9 & 10 February 2018, by Japanese Dance Grand Master Guraku Akifusa, together with his manager and interpreter Ms Eri Nakajima.

At JCC, the Grand Master shared about the history and evaluation of Kimono that surrounds the design, diversification of lifestyle, industrialization that affects the fabric and colouring and today’s challenges of the young generation losing interest – stretching from the year of 607 when Onono Imoko visited China, and 1639 to 1854 during Japan’s national isolation or sakoku policy, until after 1854 when the westernisation movement took place in Japan after reopening its doors. For Esplanade, the Grand Master explained also the ways of wearing Kimono, as well as a brief touch on its history, fabric and materials.

Together with the Grand Master, a group of Maihime dancers also demonstrated the difference between traditional and new style Kimono through a mini fashion walk and traditional Japanese dance performances at both sessions. BBCO Japan also showcased some of their suits and clothes, together with bracelets and accessories from Onyou Co., Ltd – all made of using traditional Kimono materials and style that shows their innovation in combining tradition into a new and modern form.
