On 31 May, JCC hosted a shogi talk and practice game event with professional shogi player Mr Hirotaka Nozuki, ranked 8-dan (Hachidan). Supported by Japan Shogi Association, the event welcomed participants of all experience levels in shogi, including those who were only learning about shogi for the first time.
Nozuki Hachidan gave an introduction to shogi, including its history and cultural significance, and furthermore expressed his excitement in promoting shogi outside of Japan so that more people can learn about it. He also talked about the training, diet and routine that professional shogi players go through to improve their playing and concentration skills.
Experienced participants also had the chance to play against Nozuki Hachidan in a practice match, testing their skills against the professional. The opportunity gave many participants a chance to learn from Nozuki Hachidan and fuelled their interest in shogi further. Those who were new to shogi also had the chance to learn how to play from other experienced players from Japan Shogi Association.
Singaporean shogi fans will be in for a treat when the Oza Championship arrives in Singapore in September – where they will get to witness titleholder Mr Fujii Sota face off against his competitor! Stay tuned to our JCC Facebook or sign up for our Friends of JCC mailing list for more information.
