Dear Friends of JCC,
Konnichiwa!
In early May, I was delighted that the film “Last Shadow at First Light,” which depicts both Singapore and Japan, started to be screened for the public here in Singapore. It is about a teenage girl who embarks on a journey from Singapore to Japan to search for her mother, who went missing a while after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. On the opening night of the screening, I was privileged to meet Director Ms Nicole Midori Woodford, main actress Ms Mihaya Shirata and cinematographer Mr Hideho Urata, and congratulate on their beautiful and even mystical film. I have just checked and am glad to know that the screening continues after multiple extensions.
I was also delighted that we welcomed Mr Urata to present a masterclass at JCC. The enlightening event with interesting discussions certainly served as a great prelude to our very first Japanese Film Festival Online 2024, which starts on 5 June (yes, the day that this message is out!), and will run until 3 July! All you need to do is to just register online. Please do enjoy the colourful selection of Japanese films and TV dramas from the comfort of your home! Moreover, there will be a JCC Cinema screening of the animation film “Napping Princess” at Our Tampines Hub, as well as a masterclass by Professor Deborah Shamoon at JCC, all happening within this week!
I also had the wonderful opportunity of attending the Citi Para World Series Singapore 2024, immersing myself in the excitement of a most enthusiastic crowd, as we cheered for swimmers from all various countries, including Japan and Singapore. I certainly look forward to the upcoming Paralympics Games in Paris this summer, and the World Para Swimming Championships that Singapore will host in October 2025! I wish the athletes all the best!
As the season transitions to summer in Japan, I am sure that many of you took the chance to visit Japan to enjoy the best of spring. Be sure to share your lovely photos with us through our Scenery of Japan Photo Contest by 30 June 2024! To find out what other JCC15 events we have in store for you, please follow us on Facebook and Instagram! You may also follow the Embassy of Japan in Singapore on their Facebook page for the latest news and updates from Japan.
