Director's Message

Konnichiwa!

We are now halfway through 2021! June, despite being a wet and rainy month, is still a beautiful month in Japan: blue, pink, and purple hydrangeas bloom in earnest after the rain, adding vibrant pops of colour to the landscape.

This past May, JCC, together with the Ishikawa Prefectural Government Office, organised an online gold-leafing workshop on Zoom. Even though it was through a screen, I was glad to see many happy smiles in response to the enthusiastic guidance given by our host from the Ishikawa Prefectural Government Office! It was also encouraging to see families taking part in this workshop together; though it is unfortunate that we are unable to organise a physical workshop, it is wonderful to see families spending time together and enjoying Japanese cultural activities as one. We hope that this activity was able to bring a spot of sunshine to all those who participated!

This workshop will be repeated another time in June, so do sign up for a slot if you missed out the last time! As Singapore will continue to be in Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) till the middle of June, JCC will look for more opportunities to hold events that everyone can enjoy safely from home.

Have you been keeping up with our Zoom In! Todofuken series? Starting this month, we will be introducing the charms of the prefectures that feature in The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, which is a famous series of ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa. Some of these beautiful prints will be on display at the Asian Civilizations Museum as part of the ‘Life in Edo | Russel Wong in Kyoto” exhibition. Do look forward to our posts for a more in-depth look at the prefectures along this historical route!

Do remember to follow us on our Facebook and Instagram pages to stay up to date with the programmes we organise and to learn more about Japanese culture! For more news about Japan, do also follow the Embassy of Japan in Singapore on their Facebook page!
