Director's Message

Konnichiwa!

How time flies! We have now approached the middle of the year! I am so grateful and pleased with all the support and enthusiasm that we have received through JCC’s programmes since the beginning of this year; this strong support has made me even more excited to show everyone what else JCC can present this year!

In May, 感0 – KANZERO - An Exhibition by wataboku, ended on a high note, with many guests coming to view the beautiful artworks that invoke the feeling of nostalgia. Digital art is a genre that combines technology and innovation, and to see youths interested in such topics was very heartening. It was especially encouraging to see many young students attend the artist talk by wataboku and Muju Monster, the two artists whose works were exhibited. I hope that the talk provided many young audience members with fresh perspectives on both Japanese and Singaporean digital artists and their work, and inspired them to create artworks of their own!

The warm weather of late May was also perfect for events to do with nature. Visitors to the Paragon Shopping Centre felt like they were enjoying the view of an early summer day, surrounded by floral arrangements that exemplified the five elements of Ikebana, in an exhibition by Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135. Here at JCC, we held workshops in cooperation with Ikebana International Singapore. Also an informative event about Shodoshima Island and the wonderful properties of their world-famous olives was presented to excited guests. JCC Cinema also returned with a heartwarming film about a Shiba Inu puppy that brings its owner out of his shell.

JCC will continue our JCC Cinema series in mid-June with a screening of a Ghibli film at Woodlands Regional Library. Do come with your family and friends, and enjoy the heartfelt emotions that are conveyed in the movie “When Marnie Was There”. Besides JCC Cinema, JCC will also welcome a new exhibition in our space. A unique photography exhibition by Japanese photographer and artist Mayumi Terada will run throughout the month of June, and will provide new perspectives on the theme of ‘absence’.

Do stay updated with these exciting upcoming activities by becoming a Friend of JCC! You can also look for updates on our website and Facebook page. We here at JCC look forward to seeing you at our events soon!
