Konnichiwa!
In Japan, summertime means delightful seasonal fruits like watermelon and peaches come into season. Here in Singapore, I am happy to be able to experience durian season! Time flies – I remember having my first taste of durian here just a year ago. I hope to eat more delicious durian again this year.
This past June, we held another online gold-leafing workshop together with the Ishikawa Prefectural Government Office. We were heartened to once again see so many participants enjoying themselves during the activity, and we hope that those who participated have gained a greater understanding of the natural charms and crafts of Ishikawa Prefecture. We also held “JCC Cinema 82: Okko’s Inn” in the latter half of June. This edition of JCC Cinema was held entirely online, and featured the animated children’s film “Okko’s Inn.” Even though audiences have to watch the film alone at home, we hope that everyone still laughed and cried with the protagonist and enjoyed themselves to the fullest extent.
JCC’s premises are still currently closed to the public, but we hope to be able to welcome our Friends of JCC back for more exciting events. In the meantime, check out our Zoom In! Todofuken series for interesting trivia that you may not have known about Japan. This month, we will be sharing information about Kanagawa and Shizuoka, which are prefectures that feature in The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. This a famous series of ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa, some of which will be on display at the Asian Civilisations Museum as part of the ‘Life in Edo | Russel Wong in Kyoto’ exhibition.
In addition to our Zoom In! series, this month’s Kizuna Story will also feature an interview with Clement Onn, Senior Curator at the Asian Civilisations Museum. Read on to find out how he fell in love with Japanese culture and how he incorporates Japanese influences in his work and daily life.
