Japan’s first overseas Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) office in Singapore was officially opened with a reception at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) as a SJ50 event on the evening of 27th June 2016. Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), graced the opening reception as the Guest-of-Honour, together with His Excellency Ambassador Kenji Shinoda and Executive Director of the AMED Mr Yasuo Otani.

The AMED is a funding agency with the mission to build up and maintain an environment for medical research and development in Japan, as well as to contribute to world health through their activities. During the opening ceremony, Dr Yoko Izumi, Managing Director for Research Management of the AMED, first spoke about the missions and projects of the AMED. In her presentation, she talked about Japan’s demographics and health issues, and what the AMED has done through medical research and development.

Following which, Mr Hiroshi Nakamura, New Director of the AMED Singapore Office, shared their plans and vision in Singapore. The activities of the Singapore Office comprises of 3 key points – Communication, Collaboration and Collection. He has also mentioned that the AMED has already been working closely with A*STAR based on the MOU between the AMED and A*STAR in March.

Located at Science Park 1, the AMED Singapore Office not only aims to tighten cooperation and research with Singapore, but also to connect and collaborate with medical research done around the world especially in the Asia and Oceania region. The AMED plans to establish two more overseas offices in Washington, D.C. and London, covering the America and Europe region.
